"Now the priests bearing the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firmly on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan, and all Israel was passing over on dry ground until all the nation finished passing over the Jordan." - Joshua 3:17
Moses has passed. Now, Joshua will lead the people of Israel to the Promised Land, which had been promised many years before.
And just as the Israelites passed through the sea on dry ground to escape Egypt, so they will pass through a river on dry ground, as they enter into Canaan. The two events, happening 40 years apart from each other, are being connected in this moment. This would have been astounding to those who took part. It is a direct connection to the story their mothers and fathers had told them -- things which they did not see for themselves, and yet they had faith that God's promises remained.
As we read later on in Joshua 21, "Not one of the good promises which the LORD had made to the house of Israel failed; all came to pass."
The people of God received the inheritance of their faith. They experienced the miraculous for themselves.
All the good promises of the LORD come to pass.
We are on Exodus. We were once captives to sin, death, and the devil, but God sent us someone even greater than Moses or Joshua. We know what He has accomplished; His story has been told to us.
Now, we are in the wilderness, walking towards the Promised Land. And Jesus is leading us.
We will cross over, on dry land. We will pass into the new life. We will experience the miraculous for ourselves. We will inherit the blessing of eternity.
Lord Jesus, lead us. From this life into eternity. Give us faith and strength, sufficient for the day.
Amen.
